Video is a critical component of any marketing strategy. Nonetheless, most realtors don’t create nearly enough.

A survey of real estate agents (27,000 to be exact) from all over the country discovered just why that is.

“I Don’t Like How I Look on Screen”

A major reason why realtors don’t make many video content is simply because they don’t like how they look when watching the video back. I’m sure many of you can relate to this — I know I can!

To move forward, it’s important to recognize why you feel like this. There are two main reasons. One, you may feel insecure. This is the case for me. I don’t want my friends to see how much weight I’ve gained over the years! The second reason is fear. What might people say when they see you on video?

The problem with these fears, insecurities, or whatever they are is that they are holding you back. You are beautiful just the way you are, imperfections and all. Plus, even more importantly, the people consuming your content don’t care what you look like. They want to hear what you have to say because you have so much value to bring.

Once you do put yourself out there, it’s possible you will encounter the occasional troll who leaves a nasty comment about how bad you look on video. Don’t worry about it! That troll is certainly not an ideal client and therefore does not matter. Just focus on bringing value to your audience — focus on being a real estate expert. That will be enough to find leads who are serious about buying or selling.

Simply put, you need to become a little less concerned about how you look on camera and a lot more concerned about the value you’re providing to your leads. You need to get outside your comfort zone because — remember this — the comfort zone is where dreams go to die.

I know all this is easier said than done, but there’s a trick: practice makes perfect. The more videos you make, the more comfortable you’ll become.

Besides, the whole point of making video content is to brand yourself and attract new leads. When those leads become clients, they’ll meet you and see what you look like. In other words, not making video content only delays the time it takes clients to see you at the cost of generating leads.

“I Don’t Like How I Sound”

You may have no problem with how you look, but you can’t stand hearing your recorded voice.

There’s something eerie about it. You ask yourself, “Do I really sound like that?” The fact is, most people sound different to how they think.

However, unless you receive regular feedback that your voice is shrill or that you talk in a way that’s distracting, it doesn’t matter at all.

“I Don’t Know What to Say”

This is another reason I can relate to. When I finally gained the courage to start making videos, I realized that I had no idea what to say. What should my videos even be about?

The good news for you is that this is something we help with in our coaching sessions. We even provide our agents with scripts that use tried and tested techniques, meaning we know these scripts will work with your leads.

However, I do want to encourage you to come up with your own ideas. You already have a wealth of knowledge that you could turn into video content. Just think of any question a buyer or seller has ever asked you about real estate. That will be a great topic for a video, since more buyers and sellers likely have the very same question.

Plus, as soon as you start making videos, users will comment and give you ideas for future videos — all you need to do is deliver. The more videos you make, the more ideas you’ll have.

The Three Reasons Summarized

As we’ve seen, realtors give three main reasons why they’re not creating video content: “I don’t like how I look,” “I don’t like how I sound,” and “I just don’t know what to say.”

Have you noticed a similarity in all these reasons? They all start with “I.” When I realized this, it was a huge revelation. Who are you in the real estate business to serve? Not yourself, but others. I’m in real estate to make a living to support my family and leave a legacy for my children. I’m sure you all started in real estate for a reason bigger than yourself, too.

Each one of you has a unique talent — that is a gift. By becoming a successful agent, you are able to do something with that gift. All you need to do is remember that you’re using your talent to achieve something bigger.

That’s your “Big Why.” Keep this reason in mind instead of thinking about why not to make videos — i.e. I don’t like how I look, I don’t like how I sound, or I don’t know what to say.

What to Do Next

My challenge to you today to think about why you want to succeed. What is your Big Why? It will be something bigger than you and far bigger than all those doubts you have.

Reconnect with the reason why you’re a real estate agent. Then, whenever you have some stinking thinking or you find yourself stuck and unable to make video content, you’ll just need to remind yourself of the bigger picture.

In addition, if you’re stuck with reason number three, reach out. We’ll help you come up with some ideas about what to say. And then, just start shooting. Don’t worry too much about the fine details! As I always say, done is better than perfect.
